Installation Guidelines for Stationary Compactors

The information contained below is a simplified interpretation of parts of the American National Standard Institute, ANSI-Z245.2-1997, Safety Standards for Stationary Compactors. A copy of this standard is available upon request and should be the primary reference for all safety issues.

Ground Feed Installation

If the charge box can be reached by the operator…

Totally enclosed Hopper (doghouse) with Interlock Switch (mandatory)

↓ or

Sustained Manual Pressure Control (“hold-to-run” button) (mandatory)

↓ or

Special Extended Hopper (as shown above) (mandatory)


Thru-The-Wall Installation

If the bottom of a thru-the-wall Security Door is not 42″ high

Interlock Switch

↓ or

Sustained Manual Pressure Control (“hold-to-run” button)

Note: Interlock Switch is recommended for all Security Doors and is required in some states.

If the is no 42″ high barrier between the operator and the charge box

If the operator must drive onto the compactor

Rear Feed Hopper (3 sided) with Access Gate with Interlock Switch (mandatory)

700# Treadplate (mandatory) with Hand & Toe Rails (mandatory)

Stop Button must be located within three (3) feet (36 inches) of the Material Feed Area.

Note: Compactor must have Key Switch or other security device.

An Electrical Disconnect must be located within 50 feet, and in sight of, the Compactor Control Panel.

Guard Railings for docks with walk-on ramps shall be located around the charging chamber opening. Guard railings and toe boards shall be provided on the sides of all walk-on ramps (in accordance with OSHA 1910.23).
